"Yes, Christianity still continues to be a crutch to those who will utilize it." This was my answer to an individual who accused Christianity of being such. Firstly, for a person who is ill a crutch is a blessing not a curse. Christ even alluded to this in Matthew 9:12 when he said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick." Secondly, we all have one, or two, or three, or four, etc. I've yet to meet a man, women, or child who does not possess in some form a crutch or "means of standing upright" as Webster's dictionary defines it. What is your crutch? What do you depend upon for the majority of your strength (i.e. Spiritual, emotional, or mental)? Ironically you may find that your greatest crutch is self-reliance whereas you rely upon your independence to pull you through life. Thirdly, a crutch is only detrimental if it becomes a hindrance and not a benefit. I remember a person asking me how to differentiate between hearing God's voice of chastisement or the Devil's voice of condemnation. My response was to look to the end product: God tears down to rebuild stronger, the Devil tears down as an end to itself. God desires to make us reliant upon him, since our independent methods of coping with life's issues are inherently flawed by sin. By reliance on God for our strength and guidance the end product is fullness of life and protection from pernicious habitual behavior. Many times we forget that God's the one who created life - not bondage. Freedom - not captivity.
Until you come to the full realization that God is love (1 Jn 4:8) you will be cynical of God's intentions and His desire to be our complete support and strength. Sin has inherently flawed our own independent coping methods and consequently will lead us into more bondage, captivity, and unhealthy reliance. Will you "throw-off" crutches of life which rob you of life and liberty and accept aid and salvation from the one who personifies love and desires your richest gain? (Matt 11:30)
