At first glance it would appear that Moses got a bad deal. What am I referring to? It's The Old Testament account of Numbers 20. The people of Israel were once again finding "inadequacies" in the water supply and accused both the Lord and Moses of "bringing them into the wilderness to die." So the Lord spoke to Moses to assemble all the people of Israel, take his rod (symbol of authority/position), and stand in front of a particular rock and tell it to supply water. But instead of speaking to the rock Moses struck it twice with the rod and the water flowed forth. The Lord then tells Moses that because of this disobedience (striking instead of talking to the rock) he will no longer be able to lead Israel into the promise land. Why such a penalty for a seemingly menial atrocity? Simple: God can not use someone to their full potential if they depend upon their own works rather than His word.
The rod that Moses possessed is a typology of the Word of God and the rock a typology of Christ (as this story is referred to later in the New Testament 1Cor 10:4, "For they [Israel] drank from the spiritual Rock….and the Rock was Christ."). We now begin to realize how far-reaching this perpetration was. Moses was given a promise by God, "…tell the rock …to yield its water…so you shall bring water out of the rock for them…" (Num 20:8) Moses then took this promise, or Word of God (the rod being a symbol of it and it's authority) and instead of trusting in it turned to his own works and struck the rock.
How many times do we commit the same transgression? - God gives us promises through His word (i.e. God will be our Friend, Advisor, Comfort, Joy, Freedom, Hope, & Savior) which we are to take to Christ (the rock) and speak to Him, fully expecting to receive what God promised through His son (Rom. 8:11-17, 1Jn 2:2). Yet when we stand in front of the rock and the "multitude" (i.e. friends, family, wife, husband, children, etc) we decide to "play it safe" and instead depend upon our own efforts.
My friend, speaking to the rock is risky and not for the faint of heart. There always seems to loom the threat of humiliation in front of the masses when God gives us His word to apply to seemingly risky ventures. But the challenge is simply this: When faced with another of life's difficulties or challenges and the multitude watches - will you trust God's word or cave to dependence on your own works? God's desire is to bless not humiliate, strengthen and not weaken, build-up and not tear down - but only if we trust Him exclusively when standing in front of a seemingly impossible "rock and hard place."
